Dick Mathews (Richard Cary Mathews) was born February 1, 1943 to Bill (James William) and Elaine (Elaine Ledford) Mathews. His Macon grandparents were Tom (Thomas Jacob) and Ethel (Ethel Rice) Cobb; John (John Northrop) and Helen (Helen McDonald) Mathews. He grew up in Payne City and was assistant scout master for his grandfather. He was an Eagle Scout.
His older brother, now deceased, was Bill (James William, Jr.) who was married to Clara Judd Mathews (Davidson). His younger brother, now deceased, was Tom (John Thomas) who was married to Donna Philpott Mathews and later, Christine Pope Mathews. His nieces and nephews are Missy (Mike) Cumbie, Dottie (Brad) McCallum, Mitch (Tina Dattilo) Mathews; Andy Mathews, Christie (Richie) Swain, Josh (Adrianne) Philpott; Amanda (Joe) Haubner, and Anthony (Kim) Thompson.
He attended Pearl Stephens, Bellevue, Lanier ‘61, Mercer University, and UGA ‘68 where he received an MS Degree in Horticulture (Phi Kappa Phi). He met Deborah Miles Jaudon there and they were married August 16, 1969 in Hartsville, SC. His sister-in-law is Cindy Glenn Thompson and brother-in-law was Tony (Anthony Gordon) Thompson.
He taught in the Quarter Master School at Fort Lee, Virginia before being deployed to Vietnam. His first civilian job was as a Horticulture Instructor at ABAC in Tifton, GA. A son was born there, Christopher Miles, who later married Emily Jane Keller. Their children are: Elaine Savoie, Lucas Miles, and Lucie Jane. They live in Ridgefield, CT.
Moving back to Macon in 1977, he opened Dick Mathews’ Landscape Center which closed in 2005 after many years of beautifying Macon. A daughter was born there, Katie Elaine, who later married Malcolm Augustus Loyd. Logan Hale Hooks was born June 17, 2010. They live in Watkinsville, GA.
August 15, 2022, Dick died quietly at his home (1720 Shady Oaks Lane, Greensboro, GA, 30642). He was 79. The couple’s hope was never in science, but always in Jesus and the love of God. The receiving (3:00) and funeral service (4:00) are at Bellevue Baptist Church in Macon, GA on Saturday, August 20, 2022. The graveside service (10:00 a.m.) is at Oconee Memorial Cemetery in Watkinsville, GA on Sunday, August 21, 2022.
